October - WEEK 2

If you have got all your spuds in, this is a time that I spend preparing the ground with the contents of the compost bin, planting out winter cabbages (just a few for inclusion in salad as colslaw). Chopping logs for the wood burner, and preserving the glut of food.

The traditional way of preserving tomatoes and peppers here in Bulgaria is to make it in to a kind of ratatouille as seen above. I also bottle a few potatoes although these keep quite well in a dark dry place just as well.

My first batch of wine is fermenting away nicely, and is a reminder of the good times to come for the hard work that is put in now. If you have had an early frost this is also the time when you will be able to sample your first parsnip of the year. I always wait until after the frost, this comes from advice given me by my grandfather, he said it increases the sugar content. He mainly used his in wine preaparation though so this would be vital!
