In the UK, cucumbers are best grown in the greenhouse, there are strains of ridge cucumber that will thrive outside, but if you want the smooth skin type you will probably need a greenhouse. Cucumbers grow well when climbing a south facing wall, and need as much direct sunlight as possible. Cucumbers need the same growing conditions as tomatoes, and I plant mine alongside my tomatoes at the same time.

How to Grow Cucumbers

1. Treat the same as tomatoes. Sow indoors and donít plant out until after the last frost.

2. Water regularly but do not allow the roots to sit in a waterlogged state as they may rot.

3. Cucumbers can be cut and eaten direct from the plant, or if you pick them when only a few cm long pickle them as gherkins.
